This initiative, aligned with the Royal Project on Plant Genetic Conservation, aims to cultivate a deeper appreciation for nature among students and promote sustainable development in local communities. A recent workshop organized by RBRU and the Royal Project brought together over 167 representatives from local administrative organizations (LAOs) in Chanthaburi and Trat to provide them with the knowledge and skills needed to establish and maintain school botanical gardens. These green spaces serve as valuable educational resources, promoting biodiversity conservation and environmental awareness among students. Asst. Prof. Wayakorn Udompoch, Ph.D., Vice President for Planning and Development, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, "By empowering local communities to create and manage their own botanical gardens, we are not only preserving biodiversity but also fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility among students." Dr. Piyarat Prinyapong Charoenthrap, Assistant Director of the Royal Project on Plant Genetic Conservation, highlighted the alignment of this project with Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn′s vision for plant conservation. "School botanical gardens offer a unique opportunity for students to learn about local plant species, develop a connection with nature, and contribute to the preservation of our natural heritage," he said. The workshop included both theoretical sessions and practical training, equipping participants with the necessary tools to identify local plant species, design garden layouts, and develop effective management plans. Participants also had the opportunity to share their experiences and best practices. By supporting the establishment of school botanical gardens, RBRU and the Royal Project are working together to create a more sustainable future for the people of Thailand.
