CHANTHABURI, Thailand — Rambhai Barni Rajabhat University (RBRU) officials joined provincial leaders on Tuesday to commemorate King Rama III Memorial Day, marking the 239th anniversary of the birth of Thailand’s third Chakri monarch. Assistant Professor Warin Supaporn, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, represented the university at the ceremony held at the Chanthaburi Provincial Hall. Deputy Governor Thawatchai Namsamut presided over the event, which included judicial, military, and police representatives who presented floral offerings to honor the late King’s contributions to national development.

"This annual state ceremony recognizes the foundational economic and diplomatic reforms established during the 27-year reign of King Rama III," Supaporn said. She noted that the university participates to uphold national traditions and acknowledge the monarch′s role in modernizing Thai commerce.

King Rama III, born March 31, 1787, is credited with stabilizing the Thai economy through expanded international trade and tax reforms. His administration transitioned the national revenue system from labor-based obligations to currency-based taxation, creating a sustainable financial reserve for the kingdom. Known posthumously as the "Father of Thai Trade," the King also implemented early agricultural price controls by distributing rice from royal granaries during shortages and encouraged double-cropping techniques for farmers.

The monarch’s legacy includes significant cultural and educational contributions. He ordered the inscription of various academic disciplines at Wat Phra Chetuphon, creating an early center for public learning. His foreign policy focused on maintaining Thai sovereignty while adopting Western technologies, a strategy that informed the nation’s diplomacy during the colonial era. The Thai cabinet officially designated March 31 as a national memorial day in 1992 to honor these multi-faceted achievements in medicine, commerce, and social equity.
